My dissertation project looks at how Russian legal professionals mobilize the pedagogical practice of moot courts. Relying on interaction analysis, ethnographic observation, interviewing, surveying, and archival research, I investigate the phenomenon of moot court competitions in Russia at three interconnected levels: interactions occurring during the competitions, legal ideologies motivating legal professionals who organize and participate in the competitions, and the institutional landscape framing the competitions. The broader goal of the project is to study the re-production of a cultural idea of “law” and its authority among legal professionals. Beyond my dissertation project, I also work on labor organizing and police accountability.
