About

The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality integrates the study of women, gender, and sexuality into the core research and teaching mission of the University of Chicago by supporting scholarship with the capacity to connect academic learning to lived experience and to present-day issues and contexts. We serve as an intellectual, pedagogical, and professional resource to the University of Chicago community about issues pertaining to gender and sexuality, and we seek to bridge research and academic coursework with student development, leadership, and coalition building, and with the interests and concerns of the broader campus and south side communities. The Center aims to engage scholars both within and outside the University and to facilitate new conversations across existing academic disciplines and beyond.

In addition to sponsoring talks, conferences, and exhibits, the Center hosts faculty projects, and supports individual student and faculty research agendas. The Center hosts graduate and postdoctoral fellows, and welcomes visiting scholars. On the curricular front, the CSGS offers a two- or three-quarter sequence in the College Core curriculum, Gender & Sexuality in World Civilizations, an undergraduate major and minor, and a graduate certificate. The Center supports students at all levels by providing internships, career-related programming, writing workshops, teaching opportunities, and dissertation and residential fellowships. The CSGS hosts a wide variety of academic and social events for faculty affiliates and the public, and seeks in particular to support junior faculty of all appointment types.
