Joshua Craze was born in London and has lived in Cambodia, Egypt, France, Kenya, the Netherlands, South Sudan, and the US. He was educated at St. Peter's College, Oxford; l'Ecole de Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales-Paris; the University of Amsterdam, and received his Ph.D. in socio-cultural anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2014. He has taught political philosophy at Science-Po, Paris, and anthropology at Berkeley and in San Quentin State Prison, California. His doctoral thesis is based on 18 months fieldwork in the Sudan-South Sudan border zone. He works on the relationship of ethics and politics in war photography, humanitarian work, and in anthropology. He is also currently a UNESCO 2014 Laureate Artist in Creative Writing and writes fiction and essays. His work is available at
