Preference is given to dissertation-level students for travel to study excavations and collections of classical antiquities. In case there are no candidates in any one year who are sufficiently advanced to profit by study abroad, the Fellowship may be awarded for study in residence at the U of C. In the absence of qualified candidates for either a traveling or a residence grant in Greek and Roman archaeology, the Fellowship will be available to graduate students in Near Eastern Archaeology. (This now seems to be reserved exclusively for students in the Humanities Division.)
