Welcome to the History of Anthropology Newsletter Homepage! Although we are still under construction, we expect to be adding new material as rapidly as we can, so make sure to take a look at What's New.

HAN was organized early in 1973 by Robert Bieder, Judith Modell, and George Stocking, on the model of the Mendel Newsletter for the history of genetics, in order to establish "a medium of communication for active researchers in this area," by providing "information as to archival holdings, bibliographic aids, research in progress, recent publications, and so on." Under the headings "Clio's Fancy Documents to Pique the Historical Imagination" and "Footnotes for the History of Anthropology," we included in the first volume short primary documentary materials, with brief commentary. Since then, the basic categories have remained the same, although the format underwent a face-lifting in 1981, with the introduction of vari-colored covers for each volume, along with our self-reflexive Rodinesque logo [click here for logo-history].

After a gradual increase over the first decade and a half, the circulation of HAN has remained relatively constant during the last decade at 300 or so, half of them individual subscribers in the United States and 50 of them from other countries, along with 90 research libraries (including 40 outside the United States). The same period has of course witnessed a rapid growth in the history of various human science disciplines, as evidenced in the founding of a number of other newsletters (several of them modeled on HAN), some of which may be reached via our web-link page. Although HAN does not attempt to provide the same detailed coverage as each of these does in its own area, it continues to include material on all subfields of anthropology in all national traditions, as well as work in other fields relevant to the history of anthropology.

For many years, HAN has been produced at the Department of Anthropology of the University of Chicago, under the supervision of George Stocking, its long-time de facto editor, who (with the help of a series of research assistants) has coordinated the efforts of our editorial board and a small group of frequent or one-time contributors. Although hard-copy HAN will continue into the new millenium, it is hoped that the creation of this web-site (largely through the efforts of Kevin Caffrey, research assistant and graduate student in anthropology at the University of Chicago), will help to integrate and make more effective the community of those actively interested in the history of anthropology. We welcome suggestions for its further development.
